the pickpocket: part ii

Okay. I still can't get over the pickpocket story even though it has been quite a while since the adventure. What's the big idea?

I think my roommate Kat said it best as we discussed the adventure while exiting the metro station when she said, pickpocketing is like cheating, which is just so dishonest. Stealing, cheating, lying—obviously we teach kids that these are wrong, (which they are), but why?

Well, besides dishonesty, the act of stealing disregards the work of a fellow human being. It is a disrespect of both the person and their rights. Of course, I am not talking about necessity, such as stealing to feed yourself and your family; this is something different. I'm talking about this woman on the metro, the teenager who steals the CD from Borders (probably a crappy CD not even worth stealing anyway), or the politician using funds for dishonest things. Stealing isn't just unloving or not loving, but anti-loving because it refuses to recognize another person's worth in a very basic way. Stealing, cheating and lying go against truth and right order, which I, for one, am a fan of.

Maybe we can't give everybody we meet friendship, kind words, the simple smile. But, if we cannot give our fellow human beings anything else, let's at least give them respect through honesty.

  1. why do you think that all your friends on facebook give a shit about this? posting it, fine, but you don't need to link your blog every day. nobody cares.

  2. yo “anonymous:”

Based on your comment I feel confident saying the following:

Nobody cares about you, you will never do anything important, and you will live a shallow, useless life.

You're just a critic. You chastise surf girl for linking a blog on face book for what reason? That's what face book is for--sharing what's going on in your life, what you think, what you feel. If you think she is encroaching on your face book stalking experience that's just tough for you isn't it? Why don't you stop staring at the computer and do something with your life besides tearing into people who want to encourage thought and discussion, a pursuit on the internet that is actually beneficial.

I would say you are just mean, but mean people are sometimes right and they are sometimes useful in some blunt yet truthful way (kind of like this comment—it’s mean but frank). But you are below mean. Your comment shows a lack of respect for a very universal value—being able to say what you believe in a constructive way. Instead you have taken up the role of an arbitrary critic, making comments with the lowly goal of silencing someone out of crude derision. Your comment has no good purpose so if that’s the only type of thought rolling around in your head you should probably stay in the hole you came from until you are ready to become more than a critic.

This of course is all based on your small-minded comment. If you feel different now, you should come out of your hole and say so.

Maybe you should read some of Surf Girl’s blog and take notes. You don’t have to agree with her at all. That’s beside the point. Just learn how to express whatever half-way decent thoughts you have into a constructive discourse.

  3. HEY ANONYMOUS.

    I CARE.

And I am pretty sure it is one of the most cowardly things I have ever seen to insult someone anonymously over the internet. Really original by the way.

If you do not care then don't read them, it is that simple. Oh and please feel free to not leave your very insightful comments on here ever again.

    To Liz:

The thing about human beings is sometimes they just tend to suck. What I think is important is to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and try and surround yourself with people who WON'T steal from you. It just sucks that we have to accept that some people in the world will do petty things like pickpocket or write mean comments that are completely unnecessary.

    Well-written as always

  4. I second Margaret's comment. And Liz, It doesn't matter where you go, people take advantage of inexperienced tourists. You just gotta make sure you keep important documents tucked away and watch your valuables.
